You can also manually specify the data source that will be used along with any extra optionsthat you would like to pass to the data source. Data sources are specified by their fully qualifiedname (i.e., org.apache.spark.sql.parquet), but for built-in sources you can also use their shortnames (json, parquet, jdbc). DataFrames of any type can be converted into other typesusing this syntax.

Notice that the data types of the partitioning columns are automatically inferred. Currently,numeric data types and string type are supported. Sometimes users may not want to automaticallyinfer the data types of the partitioning columns. For these use cases, the automatic type inferencecan be configured by spark.sql.sources.partitionColumnTypeInference.enabled, which is default totrue. When type inference is disabled, string type will be used for the partitioning columns.

When reading from and writing to Hive metastore Parquet tables, Spark SQL will try to use its ownParquet support instead of Hive SerDe for better performance. This behavior is controlled by thespark.sql.hive.convertMetastoreParquet configuration, and is turned on by default.

Note: This option is automatically ignored if spark.speculation is turned on. This option must be set via Hadoop Configuration rather than Spark SQLConf. This option overrides spark.sql.sources.outputCommitterClass.

Configuration of Hive is done by placing your hive-site.xml, core-site.xml (for security configuration), hdfs-site.xml (for HDFS configuration) file in conf/. Please note when runningthe query on a YARN cluster (cluster mode), the datanucleus jars under the lib_managed/jars directoryand hive-site.xml under conf/ directory need to be available on the driver and all executors launched by theYARN cluster. The convenient way to do this is adding them through the --jars option and --file option of thespark-submit command.

When working with Hive one must construct a HiveContext, which inherits from SQLContext, andadds support for finding tables in the MetaStore and writing queries using HiveQL. Users who donot have an existing Hive deployment can still create a HiveContext. When not configured by thehive-site.xml, the context automatically creates metastore_db in the current directory andcreates warehouse directory indicated by HiveConf, which defaults to /user/hive/warehouse.Note that you may need to grant write privilege on /user/hive/warehouse to the user who startsthe spark application.

A comma separated list of class prefixes that should explicitly be reloaded for each version of Hive that Spark SQL is communicating with. For example, Hive UDFs that are declared in a prefix that typically would be shared (i.e. org.apache.spark.*).

This script accepts all bin/spark-submit command line options, plus a --hiveconf option tospecify Hive properties. You may run ./sbin/start-thriftserver.sh --help for a complete list ofall available options. By default, the server listens on localhost:10000. You may override thisbehaviour via either environment variables, i.e.:

Based on user feedback, we changed the default behavior of DataFrame.groupBy().agg() to retain thegrouping columns in the resulting DataFrame. To keep the behavior in 1.3, set spark.sql.retainGroupColumns to false.

When using function inside of the DSL (now replaced with the DataFrame API) users used to importorg.apache.spark.sql.catalyst.dsl. Instead the public dataframe functions API should be used:import org.apache.spark.sql.functions._.

In Shark, default reducer number is 1 and is controlled by the property mapred.reduce.tasks. SparkSQL deprecates this property in favor of spark.sql.shuffle.partitions, whose default valueis 200. Users may customize this property via SET:

Once you have completed the requirements of the Spark program, you must complete the Spark audit form. The Center for Student Success will verify your attendance and eligibility for the textbook stipend only after you have completed this form.

Spark audit forms will be reviewed the week after Spring 2023 exams and you will be notified of your Spark status before you return to classes in August 2023. Scholarships will be awarded and loaded on to your student account by the first day of spring classes to use toward textbooks purchased for Fall 2023 classes.

UNT Mind Spark is a podcast from the UNT makerspace about innovation and making. The maker movement generated the recent increase in innovation spaces such as a makerspace. From our podcast, student makers at the University of North Texas explore various topics surrounding the Making, Maker Mindset, and the Maker movement. We have a few series that focus on a range of topics from how various spaces developed their unique makerspace/fablab/technology gym/design studio/etc. to meeting our makers to a series on specific technologies that are either in our makerspace or new in the maker community. SPARK, which stands for Science Program for the Advancement of Research Knowledge, started at Mayo Clinic in the summer of 2017 for students from Duval and St. Johns counties in Florida. The program provides an opportunity to gain exposure to the real world of scientific inquiry and nurtures interest and enthusiasm for science. During the program, SPARK scholars produce highly competitive projects that they enter in science fairs, and many have won regional and state awards, honors, and prize dollars for their research.
